Artificial Intelligence in FPS
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly common and important part of daily life, work, and learning. In Farmington Public Schools, we believe our responsibility is not simply to react to these tools, but to thoughtfully guide students in understanding, using, and questioning them in ways that support learning, integrity, and human judgment.
Our approach to AI is rooted in a clear set of guiding principles that reflect our district’s values and our commitment to students, families, and the broader community.
Our Commitments
We act with integrity and accountability when using AI. We are mindful of AI’s impact on individuals and communities, ensuring it is used ethically, honestly, and with care. AI should assist in decision-making, never replace the responsibility we have to think deeply and act with purpose. Across FPS, we take into account students’ age and developmental readiness when introducing them to AI and guiding its responsible use.
We recognize diverse perspectives and experiences and ensure that AI use promotes fairness, equity, and opportunity for all. We commit to using AI in ways that reflect cultural competence, empathy, and respect for different viewpoints so that all students feel valued and heard.
We seek clarity and openness in how AI is used. AI-generated content should be understandable, explainable, and aligned with academic integrity. We embrace transparency so that students, staff, and families can be informed, thoughtful consumers and creators of AI-driven information.
Thoughtful & Informed Learning
We approach AI with curiosity, critical thinking, and a commitment to growth. We question AI-generated content, analyze its reliability, and use it as a tool to deepen inquiry, strengthen problem-solving, and develop new ideas. We learn from both success and failure, embracing reflection and resilience in the face of challenges.
We engage with AI as creative thinkers and problem solvers. AI allows us to explore new possibilities, collaborate in meaningful ways, and adapt to an ever-changing world. We use AI intentionally, ensuring that it strengthens teamwork, curiosity, and real-world learning experiences.
